7th Armoured Division (The Desert Rats) – From El Alamein to Berlin… …via Thetford!
Nestled in the forests around Thetford, 2 miles north of Mundford sits ‘Little Audrey’ a Mk5 Cromwell tank of B Squadron 1 Royal Tank Regiment.
Audrey is a memorial to all who served in 7th Armoured Division (The Desert Rats), 4th Armoured Brigade (The Black Rats) and 7th Armoured Brigade (The Green Jerboas).
Originally dedicated to 7th Armoured Division on 23rd October 1998, an additional dedication was held on 27th June 2004 where 2 plaques were unveiled, one each for 4th and 7th Armoured Brigades.
7Div were stationed in Thetford between January and May 1944 in preparation for D-Day on 6th June 1944. This was the only time the Division was in the UK in its entire existence.
They sailed from Felixstowe on 5th June 1944, with the first tanks landing on Gold beach in the early hours of June 6th.
